J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover


    Object Number: 389642  Size: SH

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the inflatable restraint steering wheel module. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Remove the signal switch housing assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Switch Housing - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  3. Remove the lock cylinder housing assembly, ignition switch assembly and the BTSI assembly only. Refer to Lock Housing Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  4. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
  5. Remove the steering column wire harness assembly only. Refer to Wire Harness Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  6. Remove the inner boot seal (4).
  7. Remove the steering shaft seal (3).
  8. Remove the sensor retainer (2).
  9. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  11. Remove the 2 pivot pins (1) and (2) using J 21854-01 .

  12. Object Number: 421412  Size: SH
  13. Install the tilt lever.
  14. Pull back on the tilt lever to disengage the steering wheel lock shoes. Remove the steering column tilt head assembly (1) with the steering shaft assembly from the steering column jacket assembly (2).

  15. Object Number: 306316  Size: SH
  16. Remove the steering shaft assembly (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly (1).

  17. Object Number: 306318  Size: SH

    Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly before disassembly. Failure to assemble the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly correctly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  18. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly (1) 90 degrees to the lower shaft assembly (2).
  19. Disengage the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from the lower shaft assembly (2).

  20. Object Number: 306322  Size: SH
  21. Remove the 4 TORX® head screws (2) from the steering column support assembly (1).
  22. Discard the 4 TORX® head screws (2).
  23. Remove the steering column support assembly (1).
