Problem

Action

The tire pressure is low.

Adjust the tire pressure.

Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in Maintenance and Lubrication.

The suspension or the ball joints lack lubricant (the joints are worn or contaminated).

Lubricate and relubricate at the proper intervals, or replace the joints.

The following components are binding:

    • The steering linkage
    • The steering shock absorber
    • The ball joints

Replace the affected components.

The steering gear to the column is misaligned.

Align the steering column.

The pump belt is slipping.

Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 4.3L.

The drive belt tensioner is weak.

Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical 4.3L.

The fluid level in the reservoir is low.

  1. Fill the fluid reservoir to the proper level.
  2. Inspect the lines and the joints for external linkage.
  3. Refer to External Leakage Check .

The steering gear or the pump has high internal leakage.

Refer to Power Steering System Test .

The control valve is sticky.

Clean or replace the valve.

The lower coupling flange is rubbing against the steering gear adjuster plug.

Loosen the pinch bolt and the assembly properly.

The steering gear is adjusted too tight.

Adjust the over-center and the thrust bearing preload to specifications.

Refer to Steering Gear Adjustments .

The front wheel alignment is improper.

  1. Inspect the alignment.
  2. Adjust the alignment to specifications.
  3. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
