Exhaust Manifold Replacement Left Side

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 246797  Size: SH
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet duct from the throttle body and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
  2. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.

  3. Object Number: 172982  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve inlet pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  5. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  6. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.
  7. Lower the vehicle to the proper height.
  8. Remove the front tire. Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  10. Remove the fender wheelhouse extension in order to gain access to the rear exhaust manifold bolts.
  11. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  12. Object Number: 341362  Size: SH
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts and the stud.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Remove the exhaust manifold and the spark plug heat shields from the engine.
  16. Clean all gasket surfaces. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 476818  Size: SH

    Important: To assist in installing the exhaust manifold to the engine, the tabs at the bolt holes on a NEW exhaust manifold gasket will hold the bolts and the gaskets in place.

  1. Sub-assemble the spark plug heat shields, bolts, and NEW exhaust manifold gaskets to the exhaust manifold.
  2. The stud installs in the front bolt hole.

  3. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts and stud.
  4. Position the exhaust manifold by the engine.
  5. Raise the vehicle to the proper height.
  6. Install the exhaust manifold to the engine. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Installation (Left) .
  7. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  9. Install the fender wheelhouse extension.
  10. Install the front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Raise the vehicle.
  12. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  13. Lower the vehicle.

  15. Connect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.
  16. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  17. Connect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve inlet pipe to the exhaust manifold.
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the EGR valve inlet pipe exhaust manifold nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  19. Install the air cleaner outlet duct to the throttle body and the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.

Exhaust Manifold Replacement Right Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
  2. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold.

  6. Remove the right front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  7. Remove the fender wheelhouse extension in order to gain access to the exhaust manifold bolts.

  8. Object Number: 173197  Size: SH
  9. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts.
  10. Remove the spark plug heat shields through the wheel house opening.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Move the wiring harnesses aside.
  13. Remove the exhaust manifold and gaskets.
  14. Clean all gasket surfaces. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 476818  Size: SH
  1. Position the exhaust manifold by the engine.
  2. Important: To assist in installing the exhaust manifold to the engine, the tabs at the bolt holes on a NEW exhaust manifold gasket will hold the bolts and the gaskets in place.

  3. Sub-assemble the spark plug heat shields, bolts, and NEW exhaust manifold gaskets to the exhaust manifold.
  4. Apply threadlock GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the threads of the exhaust manifold bolts.
  5. Raise the vehicle.
  6. Install the exhaust manifold to the engine. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Installation (Right) .
  7. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  9. Install the fender wheelhouse extension.
  10. Install the right front tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Connect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Install the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Lower Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
