Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the A/C condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  4. Remove the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 9847  Size: SH
  6. Remove the timing chain and the camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  7. Remove the balance shaft drive gear.
  8. Remove the camshaft. Refer to Camshaft Removal .
  9. Clean and inspect the camshaft and the bearings. Refer to Camshaft and Bearings Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure

    Important: Whenever a new camshaft is installed, do the following procedures:

       • Change the engine oil.
       • Change the engine oil filter.
       • Add GM Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent to the engine oil.

  1. Install the camshaft into the engine block. Refer to Camshaft Installation .
  2. Install the balance shaft drive gear. Refer to Balance Shaft Installation for alignment of the balance shaft drive gear and the driven gear.
  3. Install the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Refer to Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement .
  4. Install the valve lifters. Refer to Valve Lifter Replacement .
  5. Install the A/C condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  6. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  7. Fill the engine cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  8. Recharge the air conditioning system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
