Subject: PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN 89C24(a)-STYLED STEEL WHEELS CRACKING

-- SUPPLEMENT --

Model and Year: 1989 CHEVROLET CORSICA EQUIPPED WITH STYLED STEEL WHEELS (RPO PC4)

To: All Chevrolet Dealers

THIS SUPPLEMENT TO PRODUCT SAFETY CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 89C24 IS BEING ISSUED DUE TO REPORTED PROBLEMS OF TRIM RING RETENTION ON NEW REPLACEMENT WHEELS. IMPROPER TRIM RING RETENTION COULD CAUSE THE TRIM RING TO SEPARATE FROM THE WHEEL WHICH COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO OR LOSS OF THE TRIM RING.

THE SERVICE PROCEDURE SECTION OF THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO INCLUDE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADJUSTING TRIM RING RETENTION CLIPS TO IMPROVE RETENTION OF TRIM RING TO WHEEL.

THE CLAIM INFORMATION SECTION OF THE BULLETIN HAS ALSO BEEN REVISED TO INCLUDE THE COST OF VALVE STEMS AND BALANCE WEIGHTS USED WHEN WHEEL REPLACEMENT IS REQUIRED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Pry off center hub cover using care to avoid damage to cover and wheel surfaces.

2. Thoroughly clean outer surface of wheel using appropriate cleaning materials and tools.

NOTICE: Wheel must be cleaned to assure correct reading and interpretation of date code stamped on center portion of wheel.

3. Read and record on repair order, the date code data stamped on center portion of wheel in the following order (see Figure 1, page 2).

A. Year Code.

B. Month Code.

C. Date/Shift Code.

If total date code falls within range of date codes listed in table on page 2, wheel must be replaced.

Table Of Suspect Date Codes

Year Code Month code Date/Shift Code --------- ---------- --------------- 88 N 15 Thru 31 & 15A Thru 31A

89 A 1 Thru 31 & 1A Thru 31A

89 B 1 Thru 28 & 1A Thru 28A

89 c 1 Thru 31 & 1A Thru 31A

4. When replacing a wheel, outer trim ring must be transferred from old wheel to new wheel.

To assure proper retention of outer trim ring to new wheel, it may be necessary to adjust outer trim ring retaining tangs (5 pair per trim ring) as shown in Figure 2, page 3.

5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 for remaining three wheels on vehicle.

6. Install Campaign Identification Label.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
