CONSOLE MOUNTED SHIFT INDICATOR DOESN'T MOVE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987 CORSICA BERETTA TEMPEST BUILT PRIOR TO 5 JAN 87

Some 1987 Corsica, Beretta and Tempest with automatic transmissions may experience a jammed shift indicator assembly. Due to damage to black shift lever opening closeout tape, this condition may prevent movement of the shift indicator.

To repair this condition replace the PRNDL assembly with a new one, P/N 10082185.

1. Remove ash tray/storage compartment, trim plate and old shift indicator.

2. Install new shift indicator, P/N 10082185 on trim plate.

3. With shift indicator in "Install" position (See Illustration) reinstall all previously removed parts.

4. Shift indicator will automatically adjust to desired position when shift lever is moved to "Park" in a normal manner.

NOTICE: IMPROPER SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENT WILL RESULT IN LESS THAN OPTIMUN SHIFT INDICATOR ADJUSTMENT. FOR ON CAR SERVICE OF SHIFT CONTROL CABLE, REFER TO SECTION 7A1 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
