Subject: | EI06005 - 1.6L L91 Timing Belt Inspection, Maintenance, Worn, Wear |
Models: | 2004-2005 Chevrolet Aveo |
with 1.6L Engine (VIN 6 - RPO L91) |
This bulletin is being updated to end the need for information from the field. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 06-06-01-021 (Section 06 -- Engine).
The current maintenance schedule requires inspection of the timing belt at 50,000 km (30,000 mi) and replacement at 96,560 km (60,000 mi). Information provided by the field provided no reason to replace the belt early. However, extending the belt usage past the recommended 96,560 km (60,000 mi) replacement interval could result in a non-warranty belt failure.
Important: Belt replacement at every 96,560 km (60,000 mi) interval is a customer paid maintenance requirement for the L91 engine.
Engine damage resulting from timing belt failure prior to the required replacement interval should be submitted as a Field Product Report and considered under warranty. Parts should be retained as usual; expecting a potential Special Parts Return Request.
Belt wear discovered prior to the replacement interval and NOT attributed to the failures list below should be submitted as a Field Product Report and considered under warranty. Parts should be retained as usual; expect a potential Special Parts Return Request.
Consequential belt failure may occur due to any of the following:
• | Improper tension adjustment after a repair that required removal of the belt. DO NOT over tension a good belt being re-used in a repair. |
• | Failed water pump - look carefully for tooth damage by turning the belt inside out. DO NOT re-use a belt that exhibits any tooth or edge wear or damage. |
• | Belt contamination by oil, fluids or anti-freeze. DO NOT re-use a belt contaminated by oil, fluids or anti-freeze. |
• | Belt damage from loose cover bolts rubbing the belt or falling into the belt path. |
• | Belt damage from contact with the cover due to impact or improper installation. |
• | Belt damage from improper cam timing and piston to valve contact during a repair. |
• | Snow/ice or mud packing inside the belt cover from severe off-road conditions. DO NOT re-use damaged belts even if damage is on the smooth (non-tooth) side. |
