Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 28467-A Universal Engine Support Fixture.


    Object Number: 333115  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Install the J 28467-A to support the engine.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the front pipe. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  6. Remove the bolts retaining the rack and pinion at the left side of the vehicle.
  7. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Remove the engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .
  9. Remove the ball joints from the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  10. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  11. Remove the brackets retaining the power steering lines (1, 2) at the engine frame.
  12. Remove the bolt retaining the rack and pinion at the right side of the vehicle.

  14. Remove the nut retaining the left transaxle mount to the engine frame.

  16. Remove the fasteners retaining the right transaxle mount to the engine frame (1).

  18. Support the engine frame with suitable jack stands.

  19. Object Number: 105376  Size: SH
  20. Remove the engine frame insulator bolts (3) retaining the engine frame (2) to the vehicle.
  21. Lower the engine frame (2) from the vehicle.

  23. Separate the engine frame insulators from the engine frame:
  24. 17.1. Remove the bolts (2) from the engine frame (1).
    17.2. Remove the lower insulator retainer (3) from the lower insulator (4).
    17.3. Remove the lower insulator (4) from the engine frame (1).
    17.4. Remove the retainer (7) and the upper spacer (6) from the upper insulator (5).
    17.5. Remove the upper insulator (5) from the engine frame (1).

Installation Procedure

  1. Assemble the engine frame insulators to the engine frame:
  2. 1.1. Install the upper insulator (5) from the engine frame (1).
    1.2. Install the retainer (7) and the upper spacer (6) from the upper insulator (5).
    1.3. Install the lower insulator (4) from the engine frame (1).
    1.4. Install the lower insulator retainer (3) from the lower insulator (4).
    1.5. Install the bolts (2) from the engine frame (1).

  3. Using dowel pins in the alignment holes (1), align the engine frame (2) with the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the engine frame insulator bolts (3) to retain the engine frame (2) to the vehicle.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 191 N·m  (141 lb ft).

  7. Remove the jack stands supporting the engine frame.

  8. Object Number: 154973  Size: SH
  9. Install the nut (1) and the bolt to retain the rear transaxle mount to the bracket.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 40 N·m  (29.5 lb ft).

  11. Install the bolt to retain the front transaxle mount to the engine frame.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 40 N·m  (29.5 lb ft).

  13. Install the bolt to retain the rack and pinion at the right side of the vehicle.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 33 N·m  (24 lb ft).

  15. Install the brackets to retain the power steering lines (1 and 2) at the engine frame.
  16. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  17. Install the ball joints to the steering knuckle. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  18. Install the engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .
  19. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Install the front pipe. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  21. Install the bolts to retain the rack and pinion at the left side of the vehicle.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 33N·m (24 lb ft).

  23. Remove J 28467-A supporting the engine.
  24. Lower the vehicle.
  25. Connect the negative battery cable.
