GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Important: If more than one Valet Key (Gray) is to be learned, each must be immediately preceded by a learned Master Pass Key®III Key (Black).

Additional keys (up to 10) may be programmed using the following procedure if a valid learned Master Pass Key®III Key (Black) is available for that vehicle.

"Learn" refers to copying the driver's key and system information to additional keys.

To learn another Pass Key®III ignition key, you must first create a duplicate of the mechanical cut of the current key. The ignition key being learned must be read by the Pass Key®III module in the following sequence. A drivers key must be used to learn any additional keys.

This procedure is for learning additional keys only, not for replacing a key due to loss of all currently programmed keys.

  1. Insert the valid driver's key (black) and start the vehicle.
  2. Once the vehicle has started, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and remove the key.
  3. If the vehicle does not start refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components .
  4. Insert the key to be learned and rotate the key to the ON position within 10 seconds of removing the previously used key.
  5. The SECURITY indicator will turn off once the key has been learned. It may not be apparent that the SECURITY indicator went on due to how quick it learns the new key.
  6. Repeat these steps to program additional keys.
