Ignition and Start Switch Replacement LHD

Removal Procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect negative battery cable. This will maintain the key code.
  4. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  5. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  6. Remove the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to one of the following procedures: Radio Replacement in Entertainment or Navigation Display Module Replacement .
  7. Remove the AC/heater control head. Refer to one of the following procedures: Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  8. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  9. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-- Tilt.
  10. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch.
  11. Disconnect the park lock cable from the ignition switch. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T80-E.
  12. Remove the ignition switch cylinder. Refer to Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder Replacement .

  13. Object Number: 291655  Size: SH
  14. Remove 1 fastener from the access hole in the IP at the steering column opening.

  15. Object Number: 291654  Size: SH
  16. Remove 2  fasteners from the radio opening hole. One fastener (2) is at the top of the opening and the other fastener is near the opening edge. The head of the screw is facing forward. This is a blind fastener. It can not be seen when installed.

  17. Object Number: 291676  Size: SH
  18. Rotate the switch in the IP.
  19. Remove the ignition switch through the radio opening.
  20. Remove the fasteners (1, 2, 3) securing the ignition switch bracket to the switch.
  21. Remove the ignition switch bracket from the ignition switch.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 291676  Size: SH
  1. Install the ignition switch housing bracket to the switch.
  2. Install the fasteners (1, 2, 3).

  3. Object Number: 291654  Size: SH
  4. Install the ignition switch into the radio opening.
  5. Install the 2  fasteners to the radio opening hole, one fastener (2) is at the top of the opening and the other fastener is near the opening edge.

  6. Object Number: 291655  Size: SH
  7. Install 1  fastener to the access hole in IP at steering column opening.
  8. Install the ignition switch cylinder to the ignition switch housing. Refer to Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder Replacement .
  9. Install the park lock cable. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle-4T80-E.
  10. Connect the electrical connectors.
  11. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-- Tilt.
  12. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Knee Bolster Replacement .
  13. Install the AC/heater control head. Refer to one of the following procedures: Control Assembly Replacement in HVAC System-Automatic.
  14. Install the radio or the navigation display module. Refer to one of the following procedures: Radio Replacement in Entertainment or Navigation Display Module Replacement .
  15. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.
  17. Release the parking brake.

Ignition and Start Switch Replacement RHD

Removal Procedure

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect negative battery cable. This will maintain the key code.
  4. Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs

  5. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  6. Remove the right instrument panel end cap. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .
  7. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
  8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition switch.
  9. Disconnect the park lock cable from the ignition switch. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T80-E.
  10. Remove the ignition switch cylinder. Refer to Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder Replacement .

  12. Remove 1 fastener from the access hole in the IP at the steering column opening.

  13. Object Number: 291654  Size: SH
  14. Remove the fasteners (2) from the endcap opening hole. One is at the top of the opening, facing forward.

  15. Object Number: 291676  Size: SH
  16. Rotate the switch in the IP and remove the switch through the endcap opening.
  17. Remove the fasteners (1, 2, 3) securing the ignition switch bracket to the retainer.
  18. Remove the ignition switch bracket from the ignition switch.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 291676  Size: SH
  1. Install the ignition switch housing bracket to the switch.
  2. Install the fasteners (1, 2, 3).

  3. Object Number: 291654  Size: SH
  4. Install the ignition switch to the IP retainer.
  5. Install the fasteners (2) to the endcap opening hole.

  6. Object Number: 291655  Size: SH
  7. Install 1 fastener to the access hole in the IP at the steering column opening.
  8. Install the ignition switch cylinder to the ignition switch housing. Refer to Ignition Switch Lock Cylinder Replacement .
  9. Install the park lock cable. Refer to Park Lock Cable Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T80-E.
  10. Connect the electrical connectors.
  11. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
  12. Install the right IP endcap. Refer to Instrument Panel Outer Trim Cover Replacement .
  13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Release the parking brake.
