4-2 DOWNSHIFT HITCH - 1983 THM 325-4L "AJ" MODEL
Some 1983 Eldorados and Sevilles equipped with HT4100 engines and THM 325-4L model "AJ" transmissions may experience a 4-2 downshift hitch. A hitch is best described as a two shift feel with a slight hesitation and bump in between. This condition is most noticeable during a full throttle detent downshift.
Late in January, 1983, beginning with transmission serial number 83 AJ 30723, a new control valve assembly went into production to correct this downshift hitch condition. When servicing any 1983 THM 325-4L model "AJ" transmission built before the above listed serial number for this downshift hitch condition, utilize service package number 8635949. This package contains the following:
1 - Spring - 4- 3 Control Valve 1 - Spacer Plate - Control Valve Assembly 1 - Pin - Coiled Spring 1 - Instruction Sheet
Refer to Serviceman Bulletin 83-16 for on-car R&I procedures, the instruction sheet contained in the service package for installation of the above parts, as well as the Service Information Manual for proper disassembly and reassembly of the control valve assembly.
For warranty purposes, use labor Operation Number K6560 at 1.5 hours.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
