1. Power Liftgate Malfunction

Circuit/System Description

The power liftgate module (LGM) supplies power and ground to the liftgate clutch, which is part of the liftgate motor assembly. Upon receiving a liftgate open request, the LGM supplies voltage to the clutch via the liftgate motor engage control circuit. The liftgate motor disengage control circuit serves a ground. With the clutch energized, the motor output is mechanically connected to the liftgate and power liftgate operation is allowed. The liftgate motor clutch engages or disengages the liftgate motor to the liftgate drive gear and is the component that determines power or manual operation. For more detailed information concerning power liftgate operation refer to Liftgate Description and Operation .

Conditions for Running the DTC

Battery voltage must be between 9-16 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • DTC B396B 01 will set when the LGM detects a short to voltage in the liftgate motor engage control circuit or the liftgate motor disengage control circuit.
    • DTC B396B 02 will set when the LGM detects a short to ground in the liftgate motor engage control circuit or the liftgate motor disengage control circuit.
    • DTC B396B 04 will set when the LGM detects an open/high resistance in the liftgate motor engage control circuit or the liftgate motor disengage control circuit.

Actions Taken When the DTC Sets

    • When an open or short to ground condition exists, power liftgate operation will be disabled.
    • When a short to voltage condition exists, the liftgate cannot be opened or closed manually.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
    • You issue a scan tool CLEAR DTCs command.

Diagnostic Aids

Whenever the LGM is disconnected or loses power, the ignition must be cycled OFF then ON.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the C3 harness connectors at the LGM.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for approximately 10 ohms of resistance between control circuit terminal 3 and control circuit terminal 4.
  3. If greater than the specified range, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  4. Ignition OFF, verify that continuity is not present between both control circuit terminals at the C3 harness connector and ground.
  5. If continuity is present, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  6. If all circuits test normal, replace the LGM.

Repair Instructions
