Diagnostic Aids

    • If the vehicle is equipped with RPO U2R or U2S the steering wheel controls are connected to the radio.
    • If the vehicle is not equipped with RPO U2V or U2X the steering wheel controls are connected to the CD changer which is a serviceable component of the navigation radio.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn ON the radio.
  3. Operate all of the steering wheel controls.

Do all of the steering wheel controls operate properly?

Test the remote radio control supply voltage circuit for a short to ground or open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Caution: When performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, the SIR system must be disabled. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling . Failure to observe the correct procedure could cause deployment of the SIR components, personal injury, or unnecessary SIR system repairs.

  1. Test the resistance of the steering wheel control switches.
  2. Press the steering wheel control switches to the correct function, one at a time, and compare the measured values to those shown.
  3. Measure the resistance between the remote radio control supply voltage circuit and the steering wheel controls signal circuit at the radio or CD changer.

Are the measured resistances approximately equal to the specified values?

Mute: 1.3K ohms

Source: 1.5K ohms

Voice Recognition: 1.9K ohms

Preset Seek: 2.4K ohms

Volume Up: 3.1K ohms

Volume Down: 4.3K ohms

Seek Up: 7K ohms

Seek Down: 14K ohms

Test the steering wheel controls signal circuit for a short, high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the radio. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the steering wheel radio controls. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the appropriate steering wheel radio control. Refer to Steering Wheel Control Switch Assembly Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

Replace the radio or CD changer and perform the set up procedure for the radio if applicable. Refer to Radio Replacement or Remote CD Changer Replacement .
