'AIR BAG' WARNING LAMP MAY STAY ON DTC'S SET (REROUTE WI)

REVISION 10/18/93

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING REVISED TO INCLUDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AND REFERENCE TO NEW CORPORATE BULLETINS ON SIR MODULE HANDLING PROCEDURES. --------------------------------------------------------------------

SUBJECT: AIR BAG WARNING LAMP MAY STAY ON, DTC'S SET (REROUTE WIRING)

MODELS: 1993 CADILLAC FLEETWOODS AND FLEETWOOD BROUGHAMS (RWD) SOP TO VIN PR700628

CONDITION:

ON THE 1993 D-CAR, THE "AIR BAG" WARNING LAMP MAY STAY ON, AND ONE OR MORE DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC'S) RELATED TO THE PSIR MODULE MAY BE SET. LIKELY SIR DTC'S MAY INCLUDE 15, 16, AND/OR 17.

CAUSE:

ISOLATED REPORTS SUGGEST THAT THE CONNECTOR FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE SIR MODULE MAY CONTACT AN I/P STUD, POSSIBLY DAMAGING THE CONNECTOR AND CAUSING AN OPEN OR SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE WIRING. THIS CONDITION WAS CORRECTED IN PRODUCTION AFTER THE VIN BREAKPOINT ABOVE. THIS CONDITION AFFECTS THE PASSENGER SIDE SIR MODULE ONLY, AND CANNOT CAUSE INADVERTENT AIR BAG ACTIVATION. THE WARNING LAMP WILL BE "ON" IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS.

CORRECTION:

1. DISABLE THE SIR SYSTEM. REFER TO PAGE 8C-7 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REMOVE THE UPPER I/P TRIM PAD, FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS ON PAGE 8C-24 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. LOCATE THE WIRING CONNECTORS ON THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE SIR MODULE, AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1.

A. IF THE CONNECTOR OR THE WIRING ON THE SIR MODULE IS DAMAGED, REPLACE THE MODULE. HANDLE THE MODULE FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS IN SERVICE BULLETINS 319003R AND 319004R.

B. IF THE I/P WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR IS DAMAGED, REPAIR THE CONNECTOR FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS IN SECTION 9J OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND TOOLS ARE PART OF THE J-38125A TERMINAL REPAIR KIT.

C. EVEN IF THERE IS NO VISIBLE DAMAGE, AND/OR THE REPAIR IN STEP B ABOVE HAS BEEN DONE, CUT THE TWO ROSEBUDS FROM THE SIR MODULE WIRING RETAINERS AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1, AND ROUTE THE WIRING BELOW THE BRACKET AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 2. THIS WILL MOVE THE CONNECTORS AWAY FROM THE STUD AND PREVENT ANY POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO THE CONNECTORS OR WIRING.

4. REINSTALL THE UPPER I/P TRIM PAD. ENABLE THE SIR SYSTEM.
