CAMPAIGN: TIE ROD CLAMP BOLTS LOOSE (UNEVEN TIRE WEAR)

TO: AFFECTED DEALERS (CHEVROLET, BUICK, AND CADILLAC)

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT CERTAIN 1992 B/D CARS BUILT AT THE ARLINGTON ASSEMBLY PLANT MAY HAVE BEEN SHIPPED WITHOUT HAVING THE FOUR (4) TIE ROD ADJUSTING SLEEVE CLAMP BOLTS/NUTS TIGHTENED. THIS CONDITION COULD RESULT IN UNEVEN TIRE WEAR.

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT TIE ROD CLAMPS FOR LOOSENESS ON INVOLVED VEHICLES. VEHICLES WITH TIE ROD CLAMP(S) LOOSE WILL HAVE A TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT PERFORMED AND THE TIE ROD ASSEMBLIES REPLACED.

INVOLVED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER COMPUTER LISTINGS. COMPUTER LISTINGS CONTAIN THE COMPLETE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, OWNER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA, AND ARE FURNISHED TO INVOLVED DEALERS WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. OWNER NAME(

AND ADDRESS DATA FURNISHED WILL ENABLE DEALERS TO FOLLOW-UP WITH OWNERS INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN.

THESE LISTINGS MAY CONTAIN OWNER NAMES AND ADDRESSES OBTAINED FROM STATE MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION RECORDS. THE USE OF SUCH MOTOR VEHICLE REGISTRATION DATA FOR ANY OTHER PURPOSE IS A VIOLATION OF LAW IN SEVERAL STATES. ACCORDINGLY, YOU ARE URGED TO LIMIT THE USE OF THIS LISTING TO THE FOLLOW-UP NECESSARY TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN.

OWNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THIS CAMPAIGN ON THEIR VEHICLE BY (DIVISION) (SEE COPY OF OWNER LETTER INCLUDED WITH THIS DCS).

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD.

OWNERS OF VEHICLES ARE TO BE CONTACTED BY THE DEALER, AND ARRANGEMENTS MADE TO MAKE THE REQUIRED CORRECTION ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN.

IN SUMMARY, WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IT IS IN YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE, PLEASE TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE SELLING OR RELEASING THE VEHICLE.

PARTS INFORMATION

NOTICE: NO PARTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN UNLESS THE TIE ROD CLAMP(S) ARE LOOSE.

IF PARTS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN, THEY ARE TO BE OBTAINED FROM GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE PARTS OPERATIONS (GMSPO). TO ENSURE THESE PARTS WILL BE OBTAINED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, THEY SHOULD BE ORDERED FROM GMSPO ON A "C.I.O." ORDER WITH NO SPECIAL INSTRUCTION CODE, BUT ON AN ADVISE CODE (2).

IF TIE ROD CLAMP(S) ARE LOOSE, ALL OF PARTS BELOW WILL BE REQUIRED TO PERFORM THIS CAMPAIGN. IT IS ANTICIPATED THAT NO VEHICLES WILL REQUIRE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT. DO NOT ORDER THE PARTS LISTED BELOW UNLESS A VEHICLE'S TIE ROD CLAMP(S) ARE LOOSE.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT VEHICLE. REFER TO GENERAL INFORMATION (SEC. 0A) OF 1992 (C/D CAR) SERVICE MANUAL.

2. GRASP ADJUSTING TUBE/SLEEVE OF ADJUSTABLE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY WITH ONE HAND AND ATTEMPT TO ROTATE TUBE/SLEEVE CLAMPS WITH OPPOSITE

HAND (SEE FIGURE BELOW).

3. REPEAT STEP 2 ON ADJUSTABLE TIE ROD ASSEMBLY ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF VEHICLE.

4. IF A TIE ROD ADJUSTING TUBE/SLEEVE CLAMP(S) IS FOUND TO BE LOOSE, PROCEED TO STEP 5. IF NO LOOSENESS IS FOUND, NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUIRED, PROCEED TO STEP 6.

5. REPLACE INNER AND OUTER TIE ROD ASSEMBLIES AND REQUIRED CONNECTING AND ATTACHING COMPONENTS FOLLOWING 1992 (C/D CAR) SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES IN STEERING LINKAGE SECTION (SEC. 3B3). PERFORM PROCEDURE ON BOTH SIDES OF VEHICLE INCLUDING TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT. CONTACT YOUR (DIVISION) ZONE/BRANCH CONTACT PERSONNEL FOR TIRE(S) REPLACEMENT AUTHORIZATION IF YOU DETECT LOOSE TIE ROD CLAMP(S) AND FEEL THAT TIRE WEAR HAS RESULTED.

6. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL". EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL-POINT PEN.

EACH "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN FOR PERIODIC SERVICING BY THE OWNER.

APPLY "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL" ONLY ON A CLEAN, DRY SURFACE.

TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, YOUR DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TIE ROD CLAMPS FOR LOOSENESS ON YOUR (C/D CAR). (C/D CAR) WITH TIE ROD CLAMP(S) LOOSE WILL HAVE A TOE-IN ADJUSTMENT AND THE TIE ROD ASSEMBLIES REPLACED. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FOR YOU AT NO CHARGE.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

PLEASE CONTACT THE (DIVISION) DEALER FROM WHICH YOU PURCHASED THE CAR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO ARRANGE A SERVICE DATE. INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING THIS CORRECTION HAVE BEEN SENT TO THE DEALER. PLEASE ASK YOUR DEALER IF YOU WISH TO KNOW HOW MUCH TIME WILL BE NEEDED TO SCHEDULE AND PROCESS YOUR VEHICLE.
