INFO. ON ENG. REPLACEMENT PROG FOR 4.6L NORTHSTAR ENGINES

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON ENGINE REPLACEMENT PROGRAMS FOR 1993 MODEL

1993 4.6L Northstar Engine: --------------------------- 1993 Eldorados and Sevilles equipped with the 4.6L Northstar engine are subject to the same service limitations as the 1993 Allante 4.6L engine exchange program outlined in DSIB 92-I-27. Refer to this bulletin for all service and engine exchange information for the Northstar engine regardless of vehicle installation.

This exchange program is expected to be in force for the 1993 model year with conventional service to begin at start of production 1994.

1993 4.9L Engine: ----------------- As in the past, whenever a 4.9L engine experiences catastrophic failure or otherwise requires engine assembly replacement, the replaced engine must be returned to GM Powertrain for analysis. Your submission of Labor Operation J1880 trigger a black label DCS message instructing you to return the complete damaged assembly. All engine assemblies should be returned regardless of reason for replacement. Once the analysis is completed you will be notified by mail of the results of our investigation and the action taken to prevent further incidents. Under no circumstances will you be debited for misdiagnosis.

Preparation For Shipping:

Engine must be returned empty of fluids. Drain oil pan and cylinder block (both sides).

REPLACE DRAIN PLUGS !!!

Remove the engine assembly as outlined in the 1993 Service Information Manual. Remove any plastic shipping plugs and covers from the exchange unit and install them on the removed unit.

If the engine leaks, mark leak area on engine. Place the removed unit into the original shipping container. Include a copy of the repair order in an envelope and attach to replaced engine.

Shipping Instructions:

Remove the original shipping label and attach a return shipping label to the container. The removed engine is to be shipped by ground truck freight collect to:

The following information should be used for claim submission:

** The amount identified in the "Net Amount" column above represents 30% of the difference between the current GMSPO dealer net price and the engine return credit (core allowance). This amount is to be placed in the "Net Amount" column of the claim.

NOTE: Applicable miscellaneous items, such as engine oil and engine coolant, should be listed in the Parts Allowance column.

1993 5.7L Engine: ----------------- 1993 Cadillac 5.7L engines may or may not be subject to a return program. Whenever a 5.7L engine assembly is replaced, the Cadillac Technical Assistance System (1-800-CAD-STAR) should be contacted to determine the engine's suitability for return. If a return is indicated, shipping requirements are the same as for the 4.9L engine described above except for the destination. The removed engine should be shipped by ground freight collect to:
