Subject:Driver Seat Module Limits

Models:2002 Cadillac Escalade

During the assembly process of the Cadillac Escalade, the second row seat on the driver's side is folded down. A large box containing the running boards is also placed on top of the folded seat. The folded seat and running board box could impede rearward travel of the driver's seat. If a person were to run the driver's seat to the furthest rearward position possible, a soft limit could be set that would be farther forward than the normal end of travel in the horizontal direction.

The drive seat module (DSM) contains a software feature to enhance seat motor durability. When the seat is moved with the power seat switch, it will run the motor until the motor stalls (usually at the end of the seat track travel physical limit). The DSM learns this position and sets a soft limit approximately 1 mm (0.04 in) before it reaches this position again.

Future seat movements attained using the seat switch will cause the seat to stop at this soft limit. This allows the motor to coast to a stop before reaching the "hard" end of travel. These soft limits may be set at any point in the seat travel. If an object impedes seat movement, the DSM will set a new soft limit were the motor stalled due to the object.

To move past this soft limit or reset it after the object is removed, follow these steps (the customer should be advised of these steps as well):

  1. Manually move the seat in the intended direction until it stops.
  2. Release the direction of travel button.
  3. Activate the seat switch in the desired direction.

The seat will clear this old soft limit and set a new one when the seat motor stalls (is impeded) again.

Important: Memory recall operations ignore the above described soft limits. The soft limits only apply to manual (power) movements of the seats.

To correct this condition, dealers are to move the driver's seat to the full rear horizontal position when there are no impediments to seat travel present during vehicle prep. Ensure that the customer is aware of how to reset these limits by explaining the procedure listed above.
