Did you perform the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Install a scan tool.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Place the gear shifter in the following gears:
  5. • PARK
    • REVERSE
    • NEUTRAL
    • DRIVE
  6. Observe the IMS parameter in the powertrain control module (PCM) data display.

Does the scan tool indicate that the IMS parameter is the same as the PRNDL display for all gears?

Replace the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .

Test Description

The number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the diagnostic table.

  1. The resistance values for both circuits should measure OL.

  2. The resistance values for both circuits should measure approximately 90-120 ohms.

  3. The resistance values for both circuits should measure OL.

  4. The resistance values for both circuits should measure approximately 90-120 ohms.

  5. The resistance values for both circuits should measure approximately 90-120 ohms.

  6. The resistance values for both circuits should measure OL.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Shift the transmission through all of the gear positions.
  3. Observe the PRNDL display in the instrument panel cluster (IPC).

Does the IPC PRNDL display the correct transmission gear position for each gear?

Test the off / run voltage circuit of the electronic PRNDL for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the ground circuit of the electronic PRNDL for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the electronic PRNDL.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Set the park brake.
  5. Place the transmission in PARK.
  6. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal A circuit to a good ground.
  7. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal B circuit to a good ground.

Do the resistances for both circuits measure near the specified value?

  1. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal C circuit to a good ground.
  2. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal P circuit to a good ground.

Do the resistances for both circuits measure near the specified value?

90-120ohms

  1. Place the transmission in REVERSE.
  2. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal A circuit to a good ground.
  3. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal P circuit to a good ground.

Do the resistances for both circuits measure near the specified value?

  1. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal B circuit to a good ground.

  2. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal A circuit to a good ground.
  3. Measure the resistance of the transmission range switch signal B circuit to a good ground.
