GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Notice: If the power steering system has been serviced, an accurate fluid level reading cannot be obtained unless air is bled from the steering system. The air in the fluid may cause pump cavitation noise and may cause pump damage over a period of time.

Notice: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use a power steering fluid meeting GM Spec. No. 9985010 or equivalent. Fluid for cold climates is also available through GM Dealerships; refer to Specifications for further information. Failure to use the proper power steering fluid can cause power steering hose and seal damage, fluid leaks and pump failure.

    • Replacing the power steering fluid is a two-stage process:
        1. Flush the old fluid from the power steering system using new fluid.
        2. Bleed the power steering system in order to remove any trapped air.
    • You may also use this procedure in cold climates, where temperatures are -12°C (10°F) or colder:
        1. Flush the system.
        2. Change the fluid.
        3. Use Low Temperature Climate Service Fluid, GM P/N 12345866 or the equivalent.
