Notice: When filling the master cylinder, use only Delco Supreme 11, GM P/N 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), or equivalent DOT 3 brake fluid. Do not use a container which has been used for petroleum based fluids, or a container which is wet with water. Petroleum based fluids will cause swelling and distortion of rubber parts in the hydraulic brake system, and water will mix with brake fluid, lowering the boiling point. Keep all fluid containers capped to prevent contamination.

The master cylinder reservoir must be kept properly filled. This is to insure an adequate fluid reserve as well as to prevent air from entering the hydraulic system. The reservoir must not be overfilled. Heat absorbed from the brakes and engine causes expansion of the fluid. The brake fluid reservoir is on the master cylinder and is located under the hood on the left side of the cowl.

  1. Clean the reservoir cap before removal to avoid contamination.
  2. Remove the master cylinder reservoir cap and the diaphragm .
  3. Caution: Do not overfill the brake fluid reservoir. Overfilling the brake fluid reservoir may cause the brake fluid to overflow onto the engine exhaust components during brake system service. The brake fluid is flammable and may cause a fire and personal injury if the brake fluid contacts the engine exhaust system components.

  4. Add the fluid required to bring to the proper level. Do not fill above the maximum indicator level in the opening on top of the reservoir. The minimum level is any level which does not cause the fluid level sensor to turn on the BRAKE warning light.
