Exhaust Manifold Installation Left


    Object Number: 522403  Size: SH
  1. Install the NEW O-ring on the oil level indicator tube.
  2. Install the oil level indicator tube.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the oil level indicator tube bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the oil level indicator tube bolt to 9.5 N·m (85 lb in).

  6. If the engine is equipped with coolant heaters, install the left side (1) heater as follows:
  7. 4.1. Place the coolant heater (1) in position on the cylinder block.
    4.2. Install the coolant heater bolt.

    Tighten
    Tighten the coolant heater bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. With the manifold still on the bench, position a new manifold gasket (1) in place on the manifold sealing surface.
  9. Install two outer manifold bolts (6) in the manifold to retain the gasket.
  10. Install a new manifold to intermediate pipe flange gasket (5).
  11. Using two hands, place the manifold (2) in the intermediate pipe and onto the cylinder head.
  12. Install new manifold flange bolts (3) for maximum joint integrity. Hand tighten. Do not torque the flange bolts to specification until the engine is mounted in the vehicle.
  13. Hand tighten the two outer manifold bolts.
  14. Install the remaining manifold bolts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the exhaust manifold bolts (6) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  16. Coat the oxygen sensor threads with high temperature anti-seize, GM P/N 5613695 or equivalent.
  17. Install the oxygen sensor (1).
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the oxygen sensor to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

Exhaust Manifold Installation Right with A.I.R.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   1. If the engine is equipped with coolant heaters, install the right side (1) heater as follows:
  2. 1.1. Place the coolant heater (1) in position on the cylinder block.
    1.2. Install the coolant heater bolt.

    Tighten
    Tighten the coolant heater bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  3. Position a new manifold gasket (1) in place on the cylinder head studs.
  4. Using two hands, position the manifold (2) onto the cylinder head.
  5. Install two outer manifold nuts (3) to hold the manifold in place.
  6. Install the remaining manifold nuts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the exhaust manifold nuts (3) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  8. Coat the oxygen sensor threads with high temperature anti-seize, GM P/N 5613695 or equivalent.
  9. Install the oxygen sensor (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the oxygen sensor to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).


    Object Number: 522468  Size: SH

    Important: DO NOT reuse the old A.I.R. valve pipe gasket.

  11. Install the NEW A.I.R. valve pipe gasket.
  12. Install the A.I.R. valve.
  13. Install the A.I.R. valve bolts through the mounting bracket.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the A.I.R. valve bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  15. Install the A.I.R. valve pipe nuts to the exhaust manifold.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the A.I.R. valve pipe nuts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  17. Connect the vacuum harness to the A.I.R. valve and vacuum solenoid valve.

  18. Object Number: 315068  Size: SH
  19. Place the exhaust intermediate pipe (2) in position.
  20. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  21. Install the intermediate pipe stud at the cylinder head (3) and the bolt at the lower crankcase (1).
  22. Tighten

    1. Tighten the intermediate pipe-to-lower crankcase bolt (1) to 35 N·m (18 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the intermediate pipe-to-cylinder head stud (3) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Important: The EGR valve inlet pipe incorporates a crush seal connection at the water crossover. The EGR valve inlet pipe must be replaced if disconnected from the water crossover.

  23. Hand start the NEW EGR inlet tube to intermediate pipe nut (1) to prevent crossthreading.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the EGR inlet tube-to-intermediate pipe nut to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  25. Connect the EGR inlet pipe flange (3) to the water crossover.
  26. Install the EGR inlet pipe to water crossover flange bolt (2).
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the EGR inlet tube to water crossover bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  4. Install the oil level indicator tube bolt.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the oil level indicator tube bolt to 9.5 N·m (85 lb in).

    4.2. Install the coolant heater bolt.

    Tighten
    Tighten the coolant heater bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  17. Install the oxygen sensor (1).
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the oxygen sensor to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Important: DO NOT reuse the old A.I.R. valve pipe gasket.

  19. Install a NEW A.I.R. valve pipe gasket.
  20. Install the A.I.R. valve.
  21. Install the A.I.R. valve nuts to the mounting bracket.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the A.I.R. valve nuts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  23. Install the A.I.R. valve bolt through the mounting bracket.
  24. Tighten
    Tighten the A.I.R. valve bolt to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  25. Install the A.I.R. valve pipe nuts to the exhaust manifold.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the A.I.R. valve pipe nuts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  27. Connect the vacuum harness to the A.I.R. valve.

  13. Install the intermediate pipe stud at the cylinder head (3) and the bolt at the lower crankcase (1).
  14. Tighten

    1. Tighten the intermediate pipe-to-lower crankcase bolt (1) to 35 N·m (18 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the intermediate pipe-to-cylinder head stud (3) to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Important: The EGR valve inlet pipe incorporates a crush seal connection at the water crossover. The EGR valve inlet pipe must be replaced if disconnected from the water crossover.

  15. Hand start the NEW EGR inlet tube to intermediate pipe nut (1) to prevent crossthreading.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the EGR inlet tube-to-intermediate pipe nut to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  17. Connect the EGR inlet pipe flange (3) to the water crossover.
  18. Install the EGR inlet pipe to water crossover flange bolt (2).
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the EGR inlet tube to water crossover bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
