Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 29800 Cut-Off Tool

Important: Service mufflers are necessary, when replacing the intermediate pipe on an originally-equipped welded system.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Support the catalytic converter and muffler.

  3. Object Number: 71709  Size: SH
  4. Remove the intermediate pipe hanger and tunnel brace.

  5. Object Number: 43556  Size: SH
  6. Cut the pipe (1) at the converter and the muffler using J 29800 cut-off tool. Cut forward, toward the weld, at the converter-to-resonator pipe (2).
  7. Remove the remaining portion of the pipe from the catalytic converter.

  8. Object Number: 71712  Size: SH
  9. Remove the muffler hanger(s) and the muffler/tailpipe assembly.

  10. Object Number: 71709  Size: SH
  11. Remove the rear intermediate pipe hanger and the intermediate pipe.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 43554  Size: SH
  1. Install the intermediate pipe and the rear pipe hanger.
  2. Install the muffler to the intermediate pipe and the hanger. Use a saddle/ U bolt type clamp.
  3. Install the intermediate pipe to the converter. Use a U-bolt type clamp.
  4. Install the intermediate pipe hanger and tunnel brace.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Align the exhaust system.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).
