The steering column includes the following 3 important features in addition to the steering function:

  1. The steering column is energy absorbing.
  2. The steering column is designed in order to compress in a front-end collision. This is intended to lessen the chance of injury to the driver.

  3. The ignition switch and lock are mounted on the column. This allows the ignition and steering operations to be locked in order to inhibit theft of the vehicle.
  4. The multi-function lever provides for control of the following components:
  5. • The headlamp high beams
    • The cruise control
    • The windshield washer and wiper

Important: Use care when removing the column assembly from the vehicle.

The column may be removed, disassembled and assembled with relative ease. Use only the following specified components:

    • Screws
    • Bolts
    • Nuts

Tighten the components to the specified torque in order to ensure the proper energy-absorbing functions.

The following actions may shear off or loosen the plastic fasteners that maintain column rigidity:

    • Using a steering wheel puller other than the one recommended in this manual
    • Striking sharply on the end of the steering shaft lever
    • Leaning on the assembly
    • Dropping the assembly

The steering wheel is wrapped in leather. The steering wheel has 4 spokes. In addition to providing steering control, the steering wheel houses the following components:

    • The inflator module (air bag)
    • The horn contact assembly

Important: Use care when removing the steering wheel from the steering column.

Place the steering wheel on a soft cloth in order to avoid tearing or damaging the leather wrapping.
