Condition

Causes

A hissing noise is present in the steering gear.

    • Some noise is present in all of the power steering systems. A hissing sound when the steering wheel is turned and the vehicle is not moving is common.
    • This noise is most evident when turning the wheel while the brakes are applied. Some hissing noise is normal under these conditions.
    • Do not replace the valve unless the hissing noise is extremely objectionable. A replacement valve has a slight noise and may not correct the condition. When diagnosing a hissing noise complaint, inspect all of the steering hoses in order to ensure that the hoses are not touching or grounded to other parts of the vehicle.
    • Improperly sealed supplemental inflatable restraint processing holes in the steering column
