Power Rack and Pinion and Pump Leak Diagnosis

    Object Number: 65368 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Adjust the torque fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
  2. If the leakage persists, replace the O-ring seal (2).

  3. Adjust the torque fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
  4. If the leakage persists, replace the O-ring seal (3).

  5. Seat the ball in the housing using a blunt punch (4).
  6. Apply the LOCTITE®™ safety solvent and LOCTITE®™ 290 or the equivalent to the area.

  7. Replace the drive shaft seal. Ensure that the drive shaft is clean and free of pitting in the seal area (5).
  8. Seat the plug in the housing (6).
  9. Apply the LOCTITE®™ safety solvent and LOCTITE®™ 290 or the equivalent to the area.

  10. Replace the O-ring seal (1).

  11. Object Number: 65367 Size: SH
  12. Adjust the torque fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
  13. If the leakage persists, replace the O-ring seal.

If the leakage is due to damaged threads, perform one of the following steps:

    • Repair the fitting nut.
    • Replace the line as needed.
  14. If the housing threads are badly damaged, replace the housing (1).
  15. Replace the dust and stub shaft seals (2).
  16. If leakage is observed between the torsion bar and the stub shaft, replace the valve assembly (3).
  17. If leakage is observed at the driver side, and is not affected by the direction of the turn, replace the pinion shaft seal (4).
  18. If leakage is observed at the housing end, and spurts when bottomed in the left turn, replace the gear (5).
  19. Replace the gear (6).
