Removal Procedure

    Object Number: 143450 Size: SH

Caution: For safety reasons, the brake pressure modulator valve assembly must not be repaired, the complete unit must be replaced. With the exception of the EBCM, no screws on the brake pressure modulator valve assembly may be loosened. If screws are loosened, it will not be possible to get the brake circuits leak-tight and personal injury may result.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.0, 4.6L.
  3. Reposition the PCM to create access to the BPMV.

  4. Object Number: 143439 Size: SH

Important: Note the location of the brake pipes to use as an aid during instillation.

Notice: When removing the brake pressure modulator valve, protect the vehicle exterior from possible brake fluid spillage. Brake fluid can cause damage to painted surfaces.

Notice: Excessive bending of brake pipes during BPMV removal or installation may cause permanent damage that will require replacement.

  5. Remove the 6 brake pipe fittings.
  6. Disconnect the EBTCM connector and BPMV motor ground cable.
  7. Remove the 3 EBTCM/BPMV assembly bracket nuts.
  8. Disconnect and reposition the 2 transmission cooler lines.
  9. Remove the EBTCM/BPMV assembly from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the front insulator and insulator mounting bolt.
  11. Remove the four EBTCM to BPMV bolts.
  12. Caution: Do not pry the EBTCM from the BPMV as damage to the seal may result.

    Object Number: 143452 Size: SH
  13. Separate the EBTCM from the BPMV by gently pulling forward until separated. Be careful not to damage the seal.
  14. Clean any brake fluid spillage from the BPMV.
  15. Clean the seal and BPMV gasket surface with alcohol.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 143452 Size: SH
  1. Install the EBTCM to the BPMV.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the 4 EBTCM to BPMV bolts.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the 4 bolts to 5 N·m (40 lb in).

  5. Install the front insulator and insulator mounting bolt.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the insulator bolt to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).

    Object Number: 143450 Size: SH

Important: If a new BPMV is being installed, remove the shipping plugs from the valve openings.

  7. Position the EBTCM/BPMV assembly in the bracket and install insulators and bracket nuts.
  8. Install the EBTCM/BPMV assembly bracket nuts.
  9. Tighten
Tighten the bracket nuts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

    Object Number: 143439 Size: SH

Caution: Make sure brake pipes are correctly connected to BPMV. If brake pipes are switched by mistake Inlet vs. Outlet, wheel lockup will occur and personal injury may result.

  10. Install the 6 brake pipe fittings, using locations noted during removal.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the 6 brake pipe fittings at the BPMV to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  12. Install the 2 transmission cooler lines.
  13. Install the EBTCM connector. Make sure the EBTCM connector tab is locked down.
  14. Install the pump motor ground cable connector.
  15. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.0, 4.6L.
  16. Install the negative battery cable.
  17. Fill and bleed hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
  18. Perform the Auto Bleed Procedure. Refer to Antilock Brake System Automated Bleed Procedure .
  19. Perform the ABS Diagnostic System Check. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - ABS .
