Because problems in the steering, the suspension, and the tires and wheels may involve several systems, these must all be considered when diagnosing a complaint. Road test the vehicle first in order to avoid using the wrong system. Proceed with the following preliminary checks and correct any substandard conditions which are found.

    • Inspect the tires for the wrong pressure and uneven wear.
    • Inspect the joints from the column to the steering gear for loose connectors or wear.
    • Inspect the front and rear suspensions, and the steering gear for loose or damaged parts.
    • Inspect for out-of-round or out-of-balance tires, bent wheels, and loose and/or rough wheel bearings.
    • Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Also, check the power steering fluid level and the pump drive belt tension.
