Removal Procedure

Caution: Place a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby before performing any on-vehicle service procedures. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury.


    Object Number: 180378  Size: SH
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief .
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in general information.

  3. Object Number: 242424  Size: SH
  4. Remove the in-line fuel filter bracket.
  5. Grasp the in- fuel filter and one fuel pipe fitting.

  6. Object Number: 157703  Size: SH
  7. Twist quick-connect fitting ¼ turn in each direction to loosen any dirt within fitting.
  8. Repeat for other fuel pipe fitting.

    Caution: Wear safety glasses when using compressed air in order to prevent eye injury.

  10. Blow out dirt from quick-connect fittings at both ends of in-line fuel filter, using compressed air.

  12. Squeeze plastic tabs of male end connector.

  13. Object Number: 12778  Size: SH
  14. Pull connection apart.
  15. Repeat for the other fitting.
  16. Remove the in-line filter.

Installation Procedure

Caution: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, before installing a new filter, always apply a few drops of clean engine oil to both pipe ends of the filter. This will ensure proper re-connection and prevent a possible fuel leak. (During normal operation, the O-rings located in the female connector will swell and may prevent proper re-connection if not lubricated).

  1. Remove the protective caps from new in-line filter.
  2. Install the new plastic connector retainers on in-line filter inlet and outlet tubes.
  3. Install the in-line filter in retainer noting the direction of flow indicated on filter.
  4. Install the new in-line filter in the same position as the old in-line fuel filter.

  6. Apply a few drops of clean engine oil to both pipe ends of the filter.

  7. Object Number: 155771  Size: SH
  8. Reinstall the quick connect fittings.
  9. Push connectors together to cause the retaining tabs/fingers to snap into place.

  10. Object Number: 155399  Size: SH
  11. Pull on both ends of each connection to make sure connection secure.

  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. inspect for fuel leaks.
  17. 12.1. Turn ignition switch to ON for 2 seconds.
    12.2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF for 10 seconds.
    12.3. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    12.4. Check for fuel leaks.
  18. Reinstall the intake manifold sight shield. Refer to Intake Manifold Removal in Engine Mechanical.
