Some 1982-1988 Cimarrons may experience a condition of delayed neutral to drive engagement. This condition may be caused by a lack of oil feed to the forward clutch.
To repair the condition, a new forward clutch housing and thrust washer is available, refer to Figure 1. The new design includes a stamped channel for increased oil feed to the forward clutch and a new powder metal bronze thrust washer. The new washer can be identified by a dimple on both sides of the washer, refer to Figure 1.
Because production changes were staged and because the previous design thrust washer will not fit the new forward clutch assembly, order parts accordingly:
- When ordering a new forward clutch housing and thrust washer, use P/N 8664982 (supersedes all previous forward clutch housing numbers). The correct powder metal bronze thrust washer will be included in the package.
- When ordering a thrust washer only - for models built before December 10, 1987 (Julian Date 344), use P/N 8652759. Otherwise, use P/N 8664762.
Refer to service information on the forward clutch housing contained in the THM 125/125C Unit Repair Section of the Service Information Manual.
For warranty purposes use Labor Operation K7200 at 5.9 hours.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
