INTERMITTENT OR CONTINUOUS HORN OPERATION - 1982 CIMARRON
Cimarrons operated in cold ambients (below 20 DEG F) may experience a self-activating horn or a horn that remains in the "on" position after releasing the horn button.
This condition results from the upper horn shroud contracting enough to force the belleville spring (refer to Figure 1) to its "on" position. This causes the horn switch to close and the horn to sound. In cases where the spring has not been deflected enough to engage the switch, it may stick in the "on" position when the operator depresses the horn button.
A revised (smaller O.D.) belleville spring (P/N 9769444) is available through GMWDD and should be used to correct either condition. To install the revised belleville spring, proceed as follows:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove center horn pad and retainer (refer to Figure 1).
3. Loosen 3 torx head screws which secure horn receiver cup (note position of horn pad alignment cutout in cup) and remove screws, insulator and cup (refer to Figure 1).
4. Remove horn belleville spring.
5. Install new spring being sure to position dished or cupped side of spring down towards horn switch (refer to Figure 2).
6. Reverse steps 1, 2, and 3 to reassemble.
For warranty purposes, use Operation No. T6058 at .3 hour.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
