FALSE CODE 34/SUSTAINED IDLE NEW PROMS AVAILABLE

MODELS AFFECTED: 1982 CIMARRONS - MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Some 1982 Cimarrons equipped with a manual transmission may set a false intermittent code 34 if engine vacuum exceeds the calibrated threshold (10 in.) needed to set a code 34 during a sustained idle or low speed deceleration.

To diagnose this false (intermittent) code 34, perform the "Diagnostic Circuit Check" on page 6E-16 of the 1982 Service Information Manual and physically check the vacuum sensor wiring for proper connections, pinches or cuts.

A service PROM is available through GMWDD to correct this false code 34 in cases where the check engine light appears intermittently during a sustained idle or deceleration. Service PROM part numbers are as follows:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
