Notice: Use J 36850 or equivalent during assembly in order to retain checkballs or to lubricate components. Lubricants other than the recommended assembly lube changes the transmission fluid characteristics and causes undesirable shift conditions or filter clogging.

  1. Inspect the main case (36) for the following:
  2. • ring groove damage
    • clutch plate lug wear or damage
    • band retaining pin retention
  3. Check all bolt holes for thread damage. Use a Heli-coil® to repair.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Inspect the cooler line fittings for proper torque.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten to 30 N·m (23 lb ft).

  7. Inspect the case to control valve body face for damage.
  8. Inspect the case for interconnected fluid passages.
  9. Inspect the servo bore for:
  10. • sharp edges
    • porosity
    • cracks
  11. Clean all of the transmission case components using clean solvent.
