Did you perform the Lighting System Diagnostic System Check?

Go to Step  2

  1. Press the brake pedal.
  2. Verify that the stop lamps are inoperative.

Are the stop lamps operating properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step  3

Determine if all of the stop lamps are inoperative or one of the stoplamp are inoperative.

Is only one of the stop lamps inoperative?

Go to Step  7

  1. Disconnect the stoplamp switch connector.
  2. Probe the battery supply voltage circuit of the stop lamp switch with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step  5

Connect a fused jumper between the battery supply voltage circuit of the stop lamp switch and the brake lamp supply voltage circuit of the stoplamp switch connector.

Do the stop lamps illuminate?

Go to Step  12

  1. Disconnect the RH stoplamp connector.
  2. Leave the fused jumper connected.
  3. Probe the brake lamp supply voltage circuit of the stop lamp with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step  10

Test for an open or high resistance in the inoperative lamp supply voltage or ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step  13

Go to Step  11

  1. Locate an open or a high resistance in the battery positive circuit of the stoplamp switch. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
  2. Repair the open or a high resistance in the battery positive circuit of the stoplamp switch. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step  13

  1. Locate an open or a high resistance in stoplamp switch signal circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
  2. Repair the open or a high resistance in stoplamp switch signal circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Locate an open or a high resistance in stoplamp ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.
  2. Repair the open or a high resistance in stoplamp ground circuit. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Replace the inoperative stoplamp. Refer to the applicable procedure:

  1. Connect all connectors and components that were previously disconnected.
  2. Verify that the brake lamps operate properly.
