Disassembly Procedure

    Object Number: 261111 Size: SH
  1. Position the wheel drive shaft assembly into a vise which has non-marring inserts.
  2. Remove the large seal retaining clamp from the outboard cross groove joint (3) with a side cutter and discard the clamp.
  3. Remove the small seal retaining clamp (4) from the wheel drive shaft bar (1) with a side cutter and discard the clamp.
  4. Clean any lubricant from the face of cross-groove outer race (3).

  5. Object Number: 261118 Size: SH
  6. Use a brass drift and a hammer to carefully tap on the outer race (4) of the cross groove joint (3).
  7. Do not damage the inner race.

  8. Remove the retaining ring from the wheel drive shaft bar (1) and discard the retaining ring.
  9. Remove the seal (2) from the wheel drive shaft bar.

Assembly Procedure

    Object Number: 256104 Size: SH
  1. Pack the outboard cross groove joint with approximately one-half of the grease provided in the service kit.
  2. Position a new small seal retaining clamp on neck of seal.
  3. Position a new large seal retaining clamp around the joint seal.
  4. Clean the wheel drive shaft bar. Use a wire brush to remove any corrosion in the seal mounting grooves.
  5. Install the seal on the wheel drive shaft bar.
  6. Install a new retaining ring onto the wheel drive shaft bar.
  7. While supporting the inboard assembly, place the wheel drive shaft assembly onto the arbor press with the outboard cross groove assembly under the press head.
  8. Press the outboard cross groove assembly onto the wheel drive shaft bar until fully seated.
  9. Remove the wheel drive shaft assembly from the arbor press.
  10. Position the joint seal into the groove on the wheel drive shaft bar.

  11. Object Number: 261115 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  12. Secure the small retaining clamp by using J 35910 with a breaker bar (3) and torque wrench (2).
  13. Tighten
Tighten the clamp to 136 N·m (100 lb ft).

  14. Check the gap dimensions. Continue tightening until the correct dimension is obtained.
  15. Specification
Continue to tighten the small seal retaining clamp until the base of the omega (ohms) shape has a gap width of 2.15 mm (0.085 in).

  16. Place the remaining grease into the outboard seal.
  17. Important: The seal must not be dimpled, stretched or out of shape in any way. If the seal is not shaped correctly, equalize pressure on the seal and shape the seal properly by hand.

  18. Position the large seal clamp onto the joint seal.

  19. Object Number: 261120 Size: SH
  20. Secure the large seal retaining clamp by using J 35910 with a breaker bar (2) and torque wrench (1).
  21. Tighten
Tighten the clamp to 176 N·m (130 lb ft).

  22. Inspect the gap dimensions. Continue tightening until the correct dimension is obtained.
  23. Specification
Continue to tighten the large seal retaining clamp until the base of the omega (ohms) shape has a gap width of 2.60 mm (0.102 in).
