Removal Procedure
  1. Release the parking brake, if applied.
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

    4. Important: Brake fluid in the caliper is subject to contamination by heat. Do not force the contaminated fluid back through the brake system.

  4. Open the bleeder screw.

  5. Attach a tube over the bleeder screw to catch the brake fluid in a container.
  6. Compress the pistons into caliper housing bore to provide clearance between linings and rotor.

  7. Remove the brake pipe retainer clip (2) (about 2 feet up the brake pipe from the caliper).

    8. Important: Use only enough force as necessary to remove the brake pipe from the mounting bracket. Ensure not to distort the pipe.

  8. Remove the brake pipe from the mounting bracket.

  9. Remove the caliper bolts (1).

    10. Important: Support the caliper so the weight of the caliper does not bend the brake pipe.

  10. Remove the caliper.

  11. Remove the rotor set screw (1).
  12. Remove the rotor.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Whenever the rotor has been separated from the axle flange, clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the axle flange and brake rotor. Failure to do this may result in increased lateral runout of the rotor and brake pulsation.

  1. Install the rotor.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the brake rotor set screw (1).

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the brake rotor set screw to 4 N·m (35 lb in).

  3. Install the caliper.

Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the caliper bolts (1).

    5. Tighten
    Tighten the caliper bolts (1) to 80 N·m (59 lb ft).

  5. Install the brake pipe into the mounting bracket.
  6. Install the brake pipe retainer clip (2).
  7. Fill the master cylinder reservoir.
  8. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Lower the vehicle.

    10. Important: New braking surfaces must be broken in or burnished after brake pads are installed and/or after rotors are refinished. Avoid overheating the brakes.

  10. Make 20 stops from 48 km/h (30 mph) using medium to firm brake pedal pressure to burnish the brake rotors.
