- Pack the inboard cross
groove joint with approximately one-half of the grease provided in the service
kit.
- Position a new small seal retaining clamp on neck of seal.
- Position the new large seal retaining clamp around the joint seal.
- Clean the wheel drive shaft bar. Use a wire brush to remove any
corrosion in the seal mounting grooves.
- Install the seal on the wheel drive shaft bar.
- Install the new retaining ring onto the wheel drive shaft bar.
- While supporting the outboard cross groove assembly, place the
wheel drive shaft assembly on the arbor press with the inboard cross groove
assembly under the press head.
- Place a block of wood over the inboard cross groove assembly before
lowering the press head.
- Press the inboard cross groove assembly onto the wheel drive shaft
bar until fully seated.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft assembly from the arbor press.
- Place the wheel drive shaft assembly into the vise.
- Position the joint seal into the groove on the wheel drive shaft
bar.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Using the J 35910
with a breaker bar (3)
and torque wrench (2), secure the small seal retaining clamp.
Tighten
Tighten the clamp to 136 N·m (100 lb ft).
- Check the gap dimensions. Continue tightening until the correct
dimension is obtained.
Specification
Continue to tighten the small seal retaining clamp until the base of
the omega (ohms) shape has a gap width of 2.15 mm (0.085 in).
- Place the remaining grease into the joint seal.
Important: The seal must not be dimpled, stretched or out of shape in any way.
If the seal is not shaped correctly, equalize pressure on the seal and shape
the seal properly by hand.
- Position the large seal clamp onto the joint seal.
- Secure the large seal
retaining clamp by using J 35910
with a breaker bar (2) and a torque wrench (1).
Tighten
Tighten the clamp to 176 N·m (130 lb ft).
- Inspect the gap dimensions. Continue tightening until the correct
dimension is obtained.
Specification
Continue to tighten the large seal retaining clamp until the base of
the omega (ohms) shape has a gap width of 2.60 mm (0.102 in).
