Tools Required
Removal Procedure
- Place the transmission in neutral.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Install the J 42066
to the wheel hub flange and secure with
wheel bolts.
- Remove the wheel drive
shaft flange bolts (1) while holding the J 42066
stationary.
- Separate the wheel drive
shaft from the wheel bearing hub flange.
Important: Ensure that the beveled side of the tool is against the differential
in order to avoid damage to the wheel speed sensor ring.
- Use the J 42071
to separate the wheel drive shaft from the differential.
- Remove the wheel drive shaft from the vehicle.
- Clean the wheel drive shaft splines.
- Clean the sealing surfaces.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the wheel drive shaft splines with differential lubricant.
- Lubricate the sealing surfaces with differential lubricant.
Important: Use only enough force necessary to seat the wheel drive shaft into the
differential.
- Use a soft faced mallet to drive the wheel drive shaft into the differential.
- Install the outer end of the wheel drive shaft to the wheel bearing
hub flange.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Use J 42066
while installing the wheel drive shaft
flange bolts to the wheel drive shaft flange.
Tighten
Tighten the wheel drive shaft flange bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft)
then an additional 67 degrees.
- Remove the J 42066
from the wheel hub flange.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
