Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  2. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement.
  3. Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement.
  4. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.

  6. As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to the 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.

  7. Object Number: 345381  Size: SH
  8. Insert the J 42069-1 and the J 42069-2 camshaft gear locking tools into the appropriate camshaft gears to hold the gears in place while removing the bolt.
  9. Remove the camshaft gear bolt.
  10. Remove the camshaft gear.
  11. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
  12. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket.

  14. Remove the timing belt idler pulley bolt for camshafts 3 and 4.
  15. Remove the timing belt idler pulley for camshafts 3 and 4 (2).
  16. Remove the water pump bolts.
  17. Important: Use a catch basin to collect escaping coolant.

  18. Remove the water pump (1).

  20. Remove the rear timing belt cover bolts.
  21. Remove the rear timing belt threaded pin.
  22. Remove the rear timing belt cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 345846  Size: SH
  1. Install the rear timing belt cover.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the rear timing belt cover bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  5. Coat the threaded pin with thread locking compound, GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent.
  6. Install the rear timing belt cover threaded pin.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt cover threaded pin to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Clean the water pump sealing surfaces.
  9. Clean the cylinder block sealing surfaces.
  10. Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 or equivalent.

  11. Object Number: 345843  Size: SH
  12. Install the water pump (1).
  13. Install the water pump bolts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  15. Install the timing belt idler pulley for camshafts 3 and 4 (2).
  16. Install the timing belt idler pulley bolt.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt idler pulley bolt until snug. After the final timing belt adjustment are made the bolt will be tightened to specifications.

  18. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket.
  19. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Important: Install the numbered camshaft gear slots on the correct camshaft alignment pins, so that the reference marks (1, 2, 3 and 4) are aligned with the notches on the rear timing belt cover.

  21. Install the camshaft gears.

    Important: Use a new camshaft gear bolt. The required tightening method will stretch the bolt, therefore the bolt is not reusable.

  23. Install the camshaft gear bolt.
  24. Tighten

        • Use the relevant J 42069-1 and/or the J 42069-2 camshaft gear locking tools to hold the camshaft gear and the camshaft in place while tightening the camshaft gear bolt.
        • Use the J 36660-A to tighten the camshaft gear bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft) + 60 degrees + 15 degrees.
  25. Turn the crankshaft clockwise back to TDC.
  26. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
  27. Adjust the timing belt if applicable. Refer to Timing Belt Timing Adjustment.
  28. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement.
  29. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement.
  30. Refill the cooling system and bleed the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
