The vehicle lighting system consists of the exterior lighting and of the interior lighting. The exterior lighting include the following lamps:

    • Headlamps (high and low beams)
    • Daytime running lamps
    • Fog lamps
    • Park lamps
    • Tail lamps, including the license lamp
    • Marker lamps
    • Turn signal lamps and emergency flashers
    • Stoplamps, including the auxiliary brake lamp
    • Backup lamps

Headlamps

The low beam headlamps may be turned on two different ways. First, when the headlamp switch is placed in the ON position. Second, with the headlamp switch placed in the OFF position and the ignition in RUN or CRANK position , during twilight sentinel operation in low light conditions. If the headlight switch is left in the ON position, the headlights are turned off after the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position. If however the headlights are turned on after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, the headlights will remain on until turned off or the battery runs dead. With the headlights in the low beam position, the high beams may be momentarily turned on or flashed with the dimmer switch handle. The flash-to-pass feature is accomplished by pulling the dimmer switch handle toward the driver. The high beams can only turned on when the low beams are operating. The high beams may be switched on by pushing the dimmer switch handle away from the driver until the dimmer switch is activated.

The daytime running lamps (DRL) illuminate the high beam headlights at a reduced intensity. With the headlight switch in the OFF position, the high beam headlights will either be turned ON or OFF, after an approximate 30 second delay depending on whether daylight or low light conditions are sensed. The DRL operates when the ignition switch is in the RUN position, and the parking (emergency) brake is not set or the transmission is not in park. When these conditions have been met and the ambient light sensor indicates daytime conditions, the DRL will illuminate. Any function or condition that turns on the headlights will cancel the daytime running lamps operation.

When the ignition switch is in the ON position and the wipers have been turned on for approximately 20 seconds, the BCM will turn on the low beam headlamps and the park lamps. The low beam headlamps and the park lamps will turn off approximately 20 seconds after the wipers have been turned off. If the ignition switch is turned to the LOCK position, the low beam headlamps and the park lamps will immediately be turned off.

Front Fog Lamps

When the driver presses the fog lamp switch with the ignition switch in the ON or ACCY position, and the park lamps or low beam headlights ON, the front fog lights will illuminate. The state of the fog lamps (on or off) will remain the same until the front fog lamp switch is pressed again. The park lamps or low beam headlights must be ON in order for the fog lights to be illuminated. The front fog lamp operation will be cancelled whenever the high beam headlights have been selected.

Park, Tail and Marker Lamps

The park, tail and marker lamps, including the license lamps, are turned on when the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK or HEAD position or anytime the headlights are requested. The exterior lights power control feature prevents the park lights from remaining on if inadvertently left on. If the park lights are turned on after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or is in the ACCY position, they will remain on until turned off or the battery runs dead.

Turn Signal Lamps

The turn signal lamps may only be activated with the ignition switch in the ON or ACCY position. When the turn signal switch lever is placed in either the left or right position, the respective turn signal lamps will flash. The respective instrument cluster (IPC) turn signal indicator, either left or right will also flash.

When the hazard switch is pressed, all turn signal lamps will flash including both IPC turn signal indicators.

Stop Lamps

When the driver presses the brake pedal, all stop lamps and the auxiliary brake warning lamp will illuminate.

Backup Lamps

With the ignition switch in the ON position and the driver selects the REVERSE position, the automatic transmission range switch will illuminate the backup lamps.

The interior lighting is divided into two groups. The first group uses incandescent lamps. This first group includes lamps that may not be dimmed:

    • Courtesy lamps
    • Dome lamp
    • Front and rear side door courtesy lamps
    • IP compartment lamp
    • Rear compartment lamp
    • [Roof rail] courtesy lamps and/or reading lamps
    • Sunshade illuminated mirror lamps

Courtesy Lamps

The courtesy lamps, include the roof rail courtesy lamps, the front side door courtesy lamps, and the dome lamp. The courtesy lamps, may be manually turned ON or OFF by the interior lamp switch, or when a door is opened (illuminated entry). The courtesy lamps will also illuminate when a restraint system has been activated. The courtesy lamps will turn on with the doors closed by using the interior lamp switch, for ten minutes after the driver removes the ignition key. The interior lamp switch will override any BCM operation of the interior lamps.

Dome Lamp

The dome lamp is part of the dome and reading lamps assembly and is mounted to the headliner near the windshield. The dome lamp is turned ON by the interior lamp switch or during illuminated entry.

IP Compartment Lamp

When the IP compartment is opened, the IP compartment lamp illuminates, if the ignition is in RUN or after a door has been opened, activating the delay interior relay. The IP compartment lamp will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

Reading Lamps

The reading lamps are part of the dome and reading lamps assembly and is mounted to the headliner near the windshield, each reading lamp may be manually turned on or off using it's own respective switch when the ignition is in RUN or after a door has been opened, activating the delay interior relay. The reading lamps will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

Rear Compartment Lamp

When the rear compartment is opened, the rear compartment lamp illuminates, if the ignition is in RUN or after a door has been opened, activating the delay interior relay. The rear compartment lamp will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

Rear Side Door Lamp

When the RH or LH rear door is opened, the RH or LH rear side door courtesy lamp illuminates, if the ignition is in RUN or after a door has been opened, activating the delay interior relay. The rear side door courtesy lamp will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

Roof Rail Courtesy Lamp

The roof rail courtesy lamp are equipped with a three position switch. Placing the three position switch in the center position enable the roof rail lamps to come on with the interior lamps switch or during illuminated entry. Placing the three position switch toward the front of the vehicle illuminates the lamps. The roof rail lamps will only illuminate if the ignition is in RUN or a door has been opened , activating the delay interior relay. The roof rail lamps will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF. Placing the three position switch towards the rear of the vehicle disables the lamps.

Sunshade Illuminated Mirror Lamps

When the vanity mirror cover on the sunshade is opened, the sunshade illuminated mirror lamp illuminates, if the ignition is in RUN or after a door has been opened, activating the delay interior relay. The sunshade illuminated mirror lamps will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

The second group includes lamps which may be dimmed. This group may use a combination of vacuum fluorescent (VF) illumination and of incandescent lamps.

    • Door switches and window switches
    • HVAC control head assembly
    • Radio
    • The instrument panel cluster (IPC)
    • Hazard warning switch
    • Heated seat switches
    • Cigarette lighter switch
    • Fuel tank filler door switch
    • Rear compartment lid release switch
    • Electronic traction control switch
    • Rear sunshade switch

Interior Lamps Dimming

When the park lamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates low light conditions, all incandescent back lighting turn on at the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer switch. At the same time all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays dim to match the indicated dimming level. When the IP dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays, as well as all incandescent back lighting respond from Minimum intensity to maximum brightness in response to the IP dimmer switch.

Interior Lamps Entry Illumination

When the driver uses the door key in order to unlock the doors, the body control module (BCM) receives a door unlock signal. The BCM must have inputs that indicate that the ignition switch is OFF, the courtesy lamp switch is OFF and all the doors are closed. The BCM will then activate the interior lamps. The courtesy lamps will remain on, approximately 20 seconds after the door is closed. If the ignition switch is turned to either the RUN or START position the courtesy lamps will turn off immediately.

When the driver uses the remote function accouter transmitter to unlock the doors, the BCM will keep the courtesy lamps on approximately 20 seconds. If the ignition switch is turned to either the RUN or START position the courtesy lamps will turn off immediately.

When a door is opened AND closed with the ignition NOT in RUN or START the courtesy lamps will illuminate for 20 seconds.

The [body control module (BCM)] module processes the inputs and the controls. The ambient light sensor supplies the BCM with a signal for daytime conditions or for low light conditions.

    • The ambient light sensor
    • The body control module (BCM)
    • The instrument panel cluster (IPC)

Driver controls include the following components.

    • The emergency flasher switch
    • The fog lamp switch
    • The headlamp switch
    • The interior lamp switch
    • The IP dimmer switch
    • The stoplamp switch
    • The turn signal switch
