Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  3. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  4. Lossen, but do not remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  5. Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  6. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.

  9. Remove the water pump bolts.
  10. Important: Use a catch basin to prevent the escaping coolant from contacting the timing belt.

  11. Remove the water pump.
  12. Clean the engine block sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 or equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 158998  Size: SH
  3. Install the water pump.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the water pump bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the water pump pulley.
  8. Inspect timing belt for serviceability. Refer to Timing Belt Inspection in Engine Mechanical.
  9. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  10. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  12. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
