J 42069 Timing Belt Alignment Kit

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  3. Remove the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement.
  4. Remove the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement.
  5. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
  6. As a precaution, rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise to the 60 degrees BTDC position to prevent valve/piston contact.
  7. Remove the camshaft gears. Refer to Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement.
  8. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
  9. Remove the timing belt tensioner bracket.

  11. Remove the timing belt idler pulley bolt for camshafts 3 and 4.
  12. Remove the timing belt idler pulley for camshafts 3 and 4 (2).
  13. Remove the water pump bolts.
  14. Important: Use a catch basin to collect escaping coolant.

  15. Remove the water pump (1).

  17. Remove the rear timing belt cover bolts.
  18. Remove the rear timing belt threaded pin.
  19. Remove the rear timing belt cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 159100  Size: SH
  1. Install the rear timing belt cover.
  2. Coat the threaded pin with thread locking compound, GM P/N 12345382 or equivalent.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the rear timing belt cover bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt cover bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  6. Install the rear timing belt threaded pin.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the rear timing belt threaded pin to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Clean the water pump sealing surfaces.
  9. Clean the cylinder block sealing surfaces.
  10. Coat the seal ring of the water pump with silicone grease, GM P/N 12345579 or equivalent.

  11. Object Number: 159013  Size: SH
  12. Install the water pump (1).
  13. Install the water pump bolts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  15. Install the timing belt idler pulley for camshafts 3 and 4 (2).
  16. Coat the timing belt idler pulley bolt with thread sealant, GM P/N 12346004 or equivalent and install the bolt.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt idler pulley bolt until snug. After the final timing belt adjustment are made the bolt will be tightened to specifications.

  18. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket.
  19. Install the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the timing belt tensioner bracket bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  21. Install the camshaft gears. Refer to Camshaft Drive Sprocket Replacement.
  22. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement.
  23. Adjust the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Timing Adjustment.
  24. Install the front timing belt cover. Refer to Timing Belt Cover Replacement.
  25. Install the intake air resonator. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement.
  26. Refill the cooling system and bleed the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling.
  27. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  28. Reprogram the applicable accessories.
