Listed below are the vehicle checks and the vehicle services that should be made by either the owner or by a qualified technician at the frequencies indicated to help ensure the following conditions:

    • To help ensure proper safety of the vehicle.
    • To help ensure emission systems performance of the vehicle.
    • To help ensure dependability of the vehicle.

Complete repairs at once whenever repairs are necessary. Any safety related or emissions related components that could have been damaged in an accident should be inspected. Perform all needed repairs before operating the vehicle.

Automatic Transmission Shift Indicator Operation

Check that the indicator points to the gear chosen. Refer to Shift Control Linkage Adjustment for adjustment of the transmission position selector switch, if necessary.

Horn Operation

Operate the horn occasionally to make sure it works. Push down on the corners of the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (air bag) to operate the horn.

Brake System Operation

Check the following when braking:

    • Check for abnormal sounds.
    • Check for increased brake pedal travel.
    • Check for repeated pulling to one side.

Something may be wrong with part of the brake system if the brake warning lamp or if the antilock brake system warning lamp goes on or flashes while braking.

Exhaust System Operation

Be alert to any abnormal sounds from the exhaust system. Be alert to any smell of fumes within the passenger compartment. These signs indicate that the system may be leaking or overheating. Inspect and repair at once.

Tires, Wheels and Alignment

Check for vibrations in the steering wheel at normal highway speeds. Check for vibrations in the seat at normal highway speeds. A wheel balance may be needed if vibration is present. A pull to the right or a pull to the left on a straight and level road may show the need for a tire pressure adjustment or for a wheel alignment.

Steering System Operation

Be alert to changes in the steering action. Inspect the steering system if the following conditions are present:

    • Inspect when the steering wheel is harder to turn.
    • Inspect when the steering wheel has too much free play.
    • Inspect when the steering wheel makes unusual sounds when turning or parking.

Headlamp Capsule Aim

Note the light pattern. Check the headlamps. Adjust the headlamps as necessary if beams are improperly aimed. Refer to Headlamp Aiming in Lighting Systems.
