DEFINITION: This table is used for diagnosing a system that does not sound good with the radio but sounds OK with the tape player or the CD player.

  1. Verify the customer's complaint with the station(s) that are normally received in your area.
  2. Compare the complaint vehicle with a similar like same vehicle in the same locations that the problems are observed.

Do both vehicles perform the same?

  1. Explain the normal reception observed in both vehicles.
  2. If the customer is still not satisfied, call Auto Manufacturer's Customer Relations Department for further assistance.

Is there a noise that accompanies the poor reception complaint?

Go to Speaker Noise - Accessory for diagnosis.

  1. Temporarily mount a test antenna with a coax to the vehicle.
  2. Ground the antenna base and check the integrity of the ground with the DMM before plugging the coax into the radio.
  3. Do not hold the antenna in your hand.

Did the radio reception improve?

  1. Check the integrity of the rear window defogger grid and the rear window braided lead wires. Repair the defogger grid or the braided lead wires if necessary. Refer to Grid Line Repair in Stationary Windows for repair of the defogger grid. Refer to Rear Window Defogger Braided Lead Wire in Stationary Windows for repair of the braided lead wires.
  2. Check the integrity of the antenna coax cable from the radio antenna amplifier to the radio. Replace the antenna coax cable if necessary.
  3. Replace the radio antenna amplifier if the antenna coax cable and the rear window defogger grid lines are OK.

Is the repair or replacement complete?

  1. Compare the reception with the ignition switch in different positions.
  2. First, turn the ignition switch to the ON position with the engine not running.
  3. Second, start the engine and let it run for a while.

Does the reception improve with the engine running and not running.

Replace the radio. Refer to Radio Replacement in Entertainment.

  1. Connect all connectors and components that were disconnected.
  2. Verify that the radio reception is OK.
