The parking brake system on this vehicle utilizes the parking brake shoes located within an integral brake drum which is cast into the rear disc brake rotor. The parking brake system applies by pulling the parking brake lever up. The lever is mounted in the center console between the front seats. The lever is a ratcheting design with a manual release on the end of the lever. Applying the parking brake lever places tension on the parking brake cables which actuates the rear parking brake mechanism. This system mechanically forces the rear brake shoes against the parking brake surfaces of the rear brake rotor which effectively locks the rear brakes.
This vehicle is equipped with coated parking brake cables. The wire strand is coated with a plastic material which slides over plastic seals inside the conduit end fittings. This is for corrosion protection and reduced parking brake effort.
Do not refinish the parking brake drum contact surface. Replace the rotor if the parking brake system cannot effectively hold the vehicle and all the other parking brake components are functioning properly. Refer to Component Specifications for additional information.
