Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the coolant bridge. Refer to Engine Coolant Bridge Replacement .
  2. Loosen the left side exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.

  3. Object Number: 159490  Size: SH
  4. Remove the oil feed line from the engine oil cooler.
  5. Remove the return line from the engine oil cooler.

  6. Object Number: 159495  Size: MH
  7. Take note of the four seals.
  8. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  9. Remove the left side catalytic converter with exhaust pipe. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  10. Remove the oil filter.
  11. Remove the crank sensor bolt.
  12. Remove the crank sensor.
  13. Remove the engine oil cooler line clamp.

  15. Remove the oil feed line from the engine block.
  16. Remove the return line from the engine block.
  17. Remove the oil feed line.
  18. Remove the return line.
  19. Lower the vehicle.

  21. Remove the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1).
  22. Remove the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).
  23. Remove the engine oil cooler cover.
  24. Remove the engine oil cooler.
  25. Clean all the sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine oil cooler.

  2. Object Number: 159496  Size: SH
  3. Apply a 2 mm (0.08 in) bead of silicone sealer, GM P/N 12345997, in the groove around the engine oil cooler cover in place of the old seal.
  4. Install the engine oil cooler cover.

  5. Object Number: 159494  Size: SH
  6. Install the engine oil cooler cover bolts (2).
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten
    Tighten the engine oil cooler cover bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  8. Install the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts (1).
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the engine oil cooler inlet and outlet nuts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  10. Raise and support the vehicle.
  11. Install the oil feed line.
  12. Install the return line.
  13. Install the oil feed line to the engine block.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the oil feed line to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  15. Install the return line to the engine block.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the return line to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  17. Install the engine oil cooler line clamp.
  18. Install the crank sensor.
  19. Install the crank sensor bolt.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the crank sensor bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  21. Install the oil filter.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the oil filter to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  23. Install the left side catalytic converter with exhaust pipe. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  24. Lower the vehicle.

  25. Object Number: 159495  Size: MH
  26. Install the oil feed and install the return lines to the engine oil cooler. Use four new seals.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the oil feed and tighten the return lines to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  28. Coat the exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts with high temperature anti-seize compound, GM P/N 5613695 or equivalent.
  29. Install the left side exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.
  30. Tighten
    Tighten the left side exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  31. Install the coolant bridge. Refer to Engine Coolant Bridge Replacement .
  32. Check and fill the engine oil as necessary. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities .
