Removal Procedure
Caution: Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur
if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel
fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have
a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.
- Remove the negative battery cable.
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Relieve the fuel system pressure. Refer to
Fuel Pressure Relief
.
- Drain the fuel tank (refer to
Fuel Tank Draining
.
- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to
Fuel Tank Replacement
.
- Remove the fuel sender assembly. Refer to
Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement
.
- Remove the fuel sending unit seal (lip) from fuel sending unit
cover.
Slide the unit seal downward, past the reservoir, and carefully over
the float arm assembly.
If you are replacing the fuel feed or the return hose, proceed to step
7.
- Loosen the clamps and remove the fuel feed or return hose.
- Before removing the fuel return hose from the reservoir, disconnect
the check valve assembly from the reservoir in order to prevent any damage
to the reservoir or the check valve.
- Remove the fuel level sensor screws.
- Remove the fuel level sensor.
If you are replacing the fuel pump, proceed to step 11.
- Loosen the clamp and remove fuel feed hose from fuel pump.
- Remove the fuel pump electrical connectors.
- Remove the fuel pump damper ring.
- Remove the fuel pump.
If you are replacing the fuel pump strainer, proceed to step 15.
