CONDITION: SOME 1997 CATERA'S BEFORE VIN BREAKPOINT VR198996 MAY EXHIBIT A CONDITION OF THE ABS AND TC INDICATOR LAMPS ON WITH A HISTORY DTC 37 (BRAKE SWITCH CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION) STORED IN THE EBTCM.
CAUSE: VOLTAGE TRANSIENTS IN BRAKE SWITCH CIRCUIT INDUCING DTC 37.
CORRECTION: REWIRE THE BRAKE SWITCH CIRCUIT AT IN-LINE CONNECTOR C200A AND C200B USING THE PROCEDURE IN THIS BULLETIN. TO PERFORM THIS PROCEDURE YOU WILL NEED A NEW WIRING TERMINAL WHICH IS AVAILABLE FROM KENT-MOORE (1-800-345-2233) USING PART NUMBER J42993 (PACKAGE OF 5 TERMINALS).
WHEN PERFORMING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE, REFERENCE THE C200A AND C200B CONNECTOR FACE VIEWS AND PIN INFORMATION ON PAGES 8A-202-6 THROUGH 8A-202-10 IN THE 1997 CATERA PRELIMINARY SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE SUPPLEMENT.
1. TURN IGNITION OFF AND REMOVE THE DRIVER SIDE KICK PANEL.
2. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR ZF 62-1 FROM ZM 62-1 AND CONNECTOR ZF 45-2 FROM ZM 45-2.
3. REMOVE THE MALE CONNECTORS ZM 62-1 AND ZM 45-2 FROM BRACKET BY REMOVING 2 RETAINING SCREWS.
4. LOCATE PIN 1 IN MALE CONNECTOR ZM 62-1 (REFER TO FIGURE 1). THERE ARE TWO BLK/YEL WIRES GOING INTO THIS PIN, ONE RUNS TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND THE OTHER TOWARDS THE REAR.
5. CUT THE BLK/YEL WIRE, CIRCUIT FB303, THAT RUNS TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE LEAVING A 2 INCH PIECE OF THE WIRE ATTACHED TO THE TERMINAL IN PIN 1 (REFER TO FIGURE 1). USE HEAT SHRINK TUBING TO COVER THE 2 INCH LEAD AND PREVENT IT FROM CONTACTING OTHER CIRCUITS, GROUNDS, ETC.
6. USING A SMALL SCREWDRIVER, REMOVE THE WIRING RETAINER (COMB) FROM CONNECTOR ZM 45-2.
7. LOCATE AND REMOVE THE BLK/BRN WIRE AND TERMINAL FROM PIN 93 (CIRCUIT FZ899) IN CONNECTOR ZM 45-2 (REFER TO FIGURE 1). THE TERMINAL CAN BE REMOVED FROM PIN 93 BY INSERTING A NARROW, FLAT TERMINAL TOOL INTO THE PIN CAVITY FROM THE FRONT SIDE OF ZM 45-2 (I.E. FACE VIEW) TO DISENGAGE THE LOCKING TAB ON THE TERMINAL. THERE IS A SMALL NOTCH OR GROOVE VISIBLE IN THE SQUARE PIN CAVITY WHICH INDICATES THE LOCATION OF THE TERMINAL LOCKING TAB.INSERT THE TERMINAL TOOL DOWN INTO THIS GROOVE AND PULL THE WIRE AND TERMINAL OUT THE BACK OF THE CONNECTOR.
8. CUT THE TERMINAL OFF THE BLK/BRN WIRE, CIRCUIT FZ899, FROM STEP 7. CUT RIGHT AT THE TERMINAL LEAVING AS MUCH WIRE AS POSSIBLE.
9. CRIMP THE BLK/YEL WIRE, CIRCUIT FB303 FROM STEP 5, AND THE BLK/BRN WIRE, CIRCUIT FZ899 FROM STEP 8, TOGETHER IN A NEW TERMINAL, J42993. INSTALL THE WIRES AND TERMINAL INTO PIN 93 OF CONNECTOR ZM45-2 (FIGURE 2), AND INSTALL WIRING RETAINER (COMB) IN ZM 45-2. NOTICE: NEW TERMINALS ARE AVAILABLE FROM KENT-MOORE (1-800-345-2233). ORDER PART NUMBER J42993. THERE ARE 5 TERMINALS PER PACKAGE.
10. INSTALL CONNECTORS ZM 62-1 AND ZM 45-2 TO BRACKET USING TWO RETAINING SCREWS. CONNECT CONNECTOR ZF 62-1 TO ZM 62-1 AND CONNECTOR ZF 45-2 TO ZM 45-2.
11. RE-INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KICK PANEL AND VERIFY REPAIR BY CHECKING BRAKE SWITCH OPERATION.
