Is the tachometer inoperative?

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS from the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER menu.
  3. Command the Tachometer from 7,000 RPMs to 0 RPMs and then back up again.

Does the tachometer respond when commanded?

Is the tachometer inaccurate?

Locate and repair an open circuit between terminal 80 of the Engine Control Module (ECM) and terminal 13 of the instrument cluster.

Is the repair complete?

Replace and program the instrument cluster. For the replacement procedure, refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Is the replacement complete?

  1. Install the scan tool.
  2. Select ENGINE SPEED from the data list and record the RPM reading.
  3. Compare the recorded RPM reading to the displayed RPM reading on the instrument cluster tachometer.

Are both readings approximately the same?
