The use of chains may adversely affect the vehicle handling due to limited tire-to-body clearance on this vehicle. Tire chain usage recommendations have been published in the Owner's Manual. Use SAE Class S tire chains when chains are to be used. These chains are specially designed to limit the fly off effect that occurs when the wheel rotates. The manufacturers of tire chains have a specific chain size for each tire size to ensure proper fit when installed. Therefore, obtain specific chains for the tire on which they are to be used. Do not use rubber adjusters to take up slack or clearance in chains which are loose due to incorrect size. Always follow the chain manufacturers installation instructions.

Refer to the following recommendations for tire chain usage:

  1. Utilize tire chains only when necessary. The probability of damage to the tire and/or the chain increases as the driving speed and the distance traveled increases. If tire chains are used on dry pavement, increased wear results since the lubricating feature of the snow or the water is not present.
  2. Normally, the proper fit for any type of chain is achieved by hand tightening it and by locking it in place. Re-tighten the chain by hand after one or two miles of driving.
