Evaporative Emission Vapor Lines/Hoses Replacement Rear

Removal Procedure

Caution: Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.

  1. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  2. Remove the fuel filler neck boot.
  3. Lift the vehicle and suitably support.
  4. Remove the hardware retaining section of the hose to be replaced.
  5. Observe the location of attaching hardware for installation.
  6. Disconnect the EVAP Vapor line near the fuel filter if replacing the EVAP hose near fuel filter at fuel tank.
  7. Support the fuel tank.
  8. Loosen the front fuel tank strap retaining bolt.
  9. Remove the rear fuel tank strap retaining bolt.
  10. Lower the tank sufficiently in order to gain access to the sending unit.
  11. Notice: 

       • Do not attempt to straighten kinked nylon pipes. Replace any kinked nylon pipes in order to prevent damage to the vehicle.
       • Do not attempt to repair sections of nylon pipes. Replace damaged nylon pipes.
       • Replace the vapor pipes with original equipment or parts that meet GM specifications.
       • Replace the vapor hoses with original equipment or parts meeting GM specifications. Use only reinforced fuel-resistant hose identified with the word Fluoroelastomer or GM 6163M on the hose.

  12. Remove the section of the line or the hose.
  13. Inspect the hoses for the following damage and replace as required:
  14. • Swelling
    • Cracks
    • Distortion
  15. Inspect the lines for the following damage and replace as required:
  16. • Holes
    • Kinks
    • Cracks
    • If removing rear EVAP line or fuel tank breather hose, proceed to step 11.
  17. Remove the exhaust system.
  18. Lower the rear end assembly. Refer to On-Vehicle Service, Rear Suspension and Drive Axles.
  19. Disconnect the quick connect fitting from the center EVAP line assembly. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  20. Remove the rear EVAP line or the fuel tank breather hose.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Follow the same routing as the original pipes and hoses. Secure the pipes and hoses in order to prevent chafing.

  1. Install the rear EVAP line or the fuel tank breather hose.
  2. Reconnect the quick connect fitting to the center EVAP line assembly. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  3. Reinstall the fuel tank straps.
  4. Raise and secure the rear end assembly. Refer to On-Vehicle Service, Rear Suspension and Drive Axles.
  5. Install the exhaust system.
  6. Reconnect the connection at the fuel filter if you are installing the EVAP hose near the fuel filter at the fuel tank.
  7. Install the retaining hardware.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the fuel filler neck boot.
  10. Install the fuel filler cap.

Evaporative Emission Vapor Lines/Hoses Replacement Center

Removal Procedure

Caution: Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen the fuel filler cap.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the exhaust system from the manifold to the rear of the vehicle.
  5. Remove the right side heat shield.
  6. Remove the plastic shield covering the lines.
  7. Remove the hardware retaining section of the hose that you are replacing.
  8. Remove the lower rear end assembly. Refer to On-Vehicle Service, Rear Suspension and Drive Axles.
  9. Disconnect the right rear brake hose bracket.
  10. Remove the clamp.
  11. Disconnect the line above the fuel filter area.
  12. Disconnect the quick connect fitting to the front line (on the right side almost in line with the catalytic converter). Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  13. Remove the EVAP vapor line from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the protective caps from the replacement line.
  2. Clean any contamination from the male line ends and apply a few drops of clean engine oil.
  3. Mount the lines to the vehicle and install the mounting hardware.
  4. Connect the center section of the line to the front line (on the right side almost in line with the catalytic converter). Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  5. Reinstall the plastic shield over the lines.
  6. Slide a new clamp over the hose and connect the EVAP vapor line above the fuel filter.
  7. Tighten the clamp.
  8. Connect the brake hose bracket.
  9. Raise and secure the rear end assembly. Refer to On-Vehicle Service, Rear Suspension and Drive Axles.
  10. Install the exhaust heat shield.
  11. Install the exhaust system.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.
  14. Tighten the fuel filler cap.

Evaporative Emission Vapor Lines/Hoses Replacement Front

Removal Procedure

Caution: Gasoline or gasoline vapors are highly flammable. A fire could occur if an ignition source is present. Never drain or store gasoline or diesel fuel in an open container, due to the possibility of fire or explosion. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher nearby.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Loosen the fuel filler cap.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the hardware retaining section of the line that you are replacing.
  6. • Observe the engine compartment front EVAP line routing for installation.
    • Observe the location of the attaching hardware for installation.
  7. Remove the plastic shield covering the lines (center section under the body).
  8. Disconnect the underbody quick connect fitting from the center EVAP vapor line. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  9. Remove the front line from the attaching hardware.
  10. Remove the right front fender well in order to gain access to the EVAP charcoal canister.
  11. Disconnect the quick connect fitting at the charcoal canister. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  12. Remove the line from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the protective caps from the replacement line.
  2. Install the front EVAP line.
  3. Clean any contamination from the male line ends and apply a few drops of clean engine oil.
  4. Reconnect a quick connect fitting to the EVAP charcoal canister. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  5. Reinstall the right front fender well.
  6. Reconnect the underbody quick connect fitting to the center section. Refer to Servicing Quick Connect Fittings .
  7. Install the retaining hardware.
  8. Install the plastic shield over the lines (center section under body).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
